This page will be divided into two sections, a section about me, Deke, and a soon to be longer (hopefully) Jack Wolfe section. I'll go first because mine is shorter.

About Deke

Deke (short for Deacon) is the webmaster and sole archivist and potentially sole fan of Wolfe's. Deke is also me. I've been obsessed with Wolfe's work since I was a teenager, I had a copy of his one-shot Human Wreckage that I studied thoroughly, the story, the art, the bleakness, it was... perfection. My parents threw it (and the rest of my comic collection) out when I left for college, and I've never found another copy. My memory of it has faded but I remember enough to keep me searching for it and more of his works. So, now that I'm a fully grown man, I've made a website to hopefully attract others who remember Wolfe's work or perhaps own some they might share.

About Jack Wolfe

Jack Wolfe (pronounced Wolf) is of course the subject of this site. He was a self-published comics artist/writer from the 90s and potentially 80s. His company Wolfe Comics was seemingly entirely run by him, producing very limited pressings of his comics which were distributed to nearby cities, including mine. Wolfe remains almost entirely unknown to the wider world, and even in his small sphere of influence it's difficult to find anyone who'd heard the name. Jack was active from sometime in the late 80s to about 1999, when his very bleak final works were released.

Wolfe was a man of mystery. Is, maybe, it's unclear if he died. Jack Wolfe released his final works before disappearing from the face of the earth. Dropped off the map. No obituary, no missing persons report, nothing. The only leads may come from his final works, art on one side, rambling essay on the other. I own one of these but I believe them to be incredibly rare, possibly one of a kind given out at some event perhaps? I've got no clue, I was traveling cross country at the time, and nobody from then still alive knows anything. I've posted that essay to the Works section and will post the art once I get a scanner nice enough to do it justice.

Another Wolfe mystery was this: Throughout his career he was approached by several large comics publishers to make comics for their then popular alternative comics lines. Wolfe never took them up, preferring to remain small and end up completely forgotten. This is obviously mind-boggling and I have no idea what he was thinking. I know this because I emailed the editor for a certain nausea themed line who told me that yes, Jack had been scouted by not just them but several large companies, and yes, he rejected each and every one no matter how much money he was offered. This editor also gave me contact info for one of Wolfe's contemporaries who actually reached notoriety before retiring in 2016, but he never answered my emails.

So what do we know? Jack Wolfe incorporated his musical interests into his work often, and refered to aspects of the comics industry with music industry terms (editor/letterer as producer, comics company as comics label, etc.) and so we know a bit of his favorite artists, which I will put somewhere. He graduated high school in 1985, I know this because a kind soul sent me in his yearbook photo (see above). That same kind soul was willing to answer a few questions in which they said about Jack, "I barely knew him, being a senior when he was a sophmore, but he parked near me and so I heard his weird music and saw his car. He'd play Black Flag one day and be playing some cyberpunk bullshit the next, never the same (...) He was ahead of his time." His mother Edna is in a nursing home and suffering from dementia. I've gone to visit her, and she either doesn't like to talk about Jack, or can't remember. Probably the former since he apparently never visited her.

Jack used to have a wikipedia page, I know this. But now, if you go back and look, only an actor and painter come up. But I remember it. It had a paragraph of info about him, stuff we already know, like his company and years active (of course incorrect, since I've found stuff from before the 90s) It also had a list of published works, which is unfortunately lost. If these were saved, I'd at least know were to start looking. I don't know how his page disappeared without a trace, again, another Wolfe mystery.
